Grass Cutting Mexican Style

On Saturday at the Bible School, we had "Happy Day" which means work day. I don't know who named it that but we all laugh at that. It was a hot day and there was a lot of work to do. First I helped a short-term missions group get all set up for their work project of repairing a wall at the elementary school and then I went off with a group of our students to cut grass. I have always wanted to learn this, but I have finally learned how to cut grass with a machete! My forearms are a little sore from it, and it was really tedious, but the grass looks great. Well, not the grass, because now there isn't any, but the bare ground looks great! :)

So, the trick is to have a stick in your left hand about two feet long. You bend both knees and lean down, lifting the grass with the stick, and then you swipe the machete with your right hand parallel to the ground. The machete has to be nice and sharp for best effect.

Why don't they use a weed-eater? Apparently several years ago a missions team donated five of them, but the Mexicans were afraid of them and ended up sticking with the machetes. I was happy to find one student on the other side of the property who had the courage to get one up and running! The others stood back and watched from a distance in amazement.

Wow, I am impressed, Jan! Hubby can't even get me to cut grass with the riding lawn mower.
