Quiet Times/Devotions

I'll be honest... I have never ever ever been a really good quiet time/devotions person. The desire has been there, but I just couldn't get myself organized at all to read the Bible and spend time in prayer. This will be the focus of my Thursday Thoughts.

There was a time when I was in college that my friends would ask me, "So, how was your devotion today?" or, "What did God show you in your quiet time?" I would have to think about that answer and pull something out kind of generic because even if I had read the Bible I wasn't really getting any nuggets out of it. I would just kind of open the book to a page and read.

A couple of years ago I got a hold of a wonderful book, written by Lisa Harper, that was a Bible study on Hosea. I loved that study, felt like it was the first time I got some meat out of it. I focused on Hosea for several months, read other books about it, and pulled all sorts of wonderful things from it. After that, I was kind of just in a slump again. My mom gave me a Women's Devotional Bible, which I liked okay, but the devotions were kind of surfacy and cheesy at times.

In June, while I was visiting my friend in Nicaragua, she gave me a wonderful gift, the One Year Bible. She had been reading it for a couple of months and told me that it had helped her be more consistent. We decided that at least reading it together would help us stay accountable. I have to say that I have been so incredibly consistent with this Bible. It is easily read, easily divided per day, and I am actually reading both the Old Testament and the New Testament from front to back. I am reading things I have never seen before, and God is opening my eyes up to so many things. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

I'm glad you shared this. I struggle with the same things when it comes to devotions. I will have to try out the "Bible in a Year" to see if that helps me with the bible study.

It's amazing that some things in life are easy for me...I am highly motivated to be disciplined and organized, it's the follow through I struggle with. Thanks for sharing Jan, it's nice to know I'm not the only one in the world.
